Asada aims to raise game in return to Grand Prix Final
　NARITA, Chiba--Mao Asada went to Moscow last week on a mission, which she accomplished by qualifying for the ISU Grand Prix Final with a victory in the Rostelecom Cup.
　But the Japanese star knows she needs to put on a better performance than the one she did on the Moscow ice if she wants to come away with the title at the season-ending meet in Quebec City, Canada, starting Dec. 9.

　タイトルにあるgameに着目したいと思います。gameには，「試合」という意味だけでなく，「試合運び」という意味があります（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』学研）。LDOCEにもskillと説明があるので，「腕前，技術」というニュアンスがあるといえます。『ジーニアス英和大辞典』（大修館書店）には，raise [improve] one's gameで「腕を上げる」と掲載されています。したがって，本タイトルはグランプリ・ファイナルを奪還するために更なる技術向上を図るといった意味で解釈が可能だと思います。
　gameは実は多義語なので，辞書を読んでみると面白いと思います。例えば，「大ぶろしきを広げる」はtalk a great game，「冗談で言う」はspeak in gameという場合にもgameが使えるようです（『ジーニアス英和大辞典』同上）。他にも，I'm game.「（相手の誘いに応じて）よしやろう」やThe game's up.「万事休す」といった表現を大学時代に教えていただいたことを思い出しました。
