　Abolishing the death penalty would represent a step toward becoming a "mature democratic nation," former Justice Minister Seiken Sugiura said recently at a public gathering in Tokyo.
　"It is a big yardstick" for determining whether a nation is fully democratized, the certified lawyer said. The meeting was attended by a delegation of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, which reported the findings from its four-day visit in June to South Korea, where executions have been suspended for nearly 15 years.

　本記事では死刑制度があるか否かは，その国が真に民主主義といえるかどうかを決定づけるための指標となると述べられています。その「指標」という訳語に当たるのがyardstickです。LDOCEによれば，yardstickは，something taht you compare another thing with, in order to judge how good or successful it isと定義づけられています。つまり，「ある物事がいかに成功しているのかを判断するために他と比較する」ときに使うことがわかります。今回は，民主主義がどれだけ機能しているかを見極める基準となるということなので，yardstickがしっくりくるように思います。
　また，yardstickの例文として，Profit is the most important yardstick of success for any business.が取り上げられていました。インターネットで検索をかけてみると，yardstickはこの例文のようにしばしばsuccessと共起するようです。
　ところで，standardやmeasureも「尺度，基準」という意味がありますが，これらとはどのように異なるのでしょうか。最後にLDOCEで定義を確認します。ポイントは赤字の部分でしょう。
