　昨日取り上げた記事の中からもう１つ英語表現を拾います。

Serbia outlasted Japan in five sets (18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 15-9) on the final day of action in the FIVB Women's Olympic qualifying tournament at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Sunday. The results assured both teams of a berth in the London Olympic Games.

　berthは元々，海事用語で「（波止場の）停泊位置，停泊所」という意味です（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』学研）。そこから転じて，「（大会などへの）出場権」という意味で使われるようになりました。「競技などに出場するための場所」が元々の意味だと考えられます。secure，earn，clinchなどの動詞としばしば共起するようです。
　他にberthを用いた表現として，give A a wide berth / give a wide berth to Aがあります。「A（いやな場所・危険な人など）を敬遠する」という意味です（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』同上）。「停泊位置から十分な距離をとる」を比喩的にとって「敬遠する」となったといえます。
