　もの凄い嵐です。「嵐に備える」ときの「備える」は英語でなんというでしょう。JT（04/03/12付）のタイトルにあった表現です。

　上記の英文にあるように，braceを使うのですね。braceを辞書で引くと，「＜困難・不快事に対して＞備える，心の準備をする」とあります（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社）。通例，oneselfを目的語にとるようです。

e.g. Brace yourself for some bad news.

　braceは，名詞で「締め金，とめ金」の意味をもちます。「何かを補強しておくもの」という意味から，動詞の「備える」という意味が生まれたのでしょう。
　ところで，prepareとの違いは何でしょうか。LDOCEによれば，prepareはto make yourself mentally or physically ready for something that you expect to happen soon，braceはto mentally or physically prepare yourself or someone else for something unpleasant that is going to happenとあります。braceは「これから起こりそうな嫌なことや悪いこと」に対して使う点でprepareとは異なるといえます。だから，ここではbraceが使われているのですね。
