auspicious

　銭湯の壁に描かれている絵と聞いてどのような絵を思い浮かべるでしょうか。よくテレビなどで見る定番は富士山のように思いますが，東京の銭湯では消えつつあるようです。そんなことを伝えるDY（11/11/11付）の記事を紹介します。

　auspiciousとは「幸先のよい，縁起のよい」という意味で（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』学研），auspicious start「幸先のいいスタート」というように使われます。同様の意味を表す英語にhead startという表現がありますが，どのような違いがあるのでしょうか。LDOCEで語義を調べると，auspiciousはformal showing that something is likely to be successfulとあり，head startはan advantage that helps you to be successfulとあります。前者は成功の「予感」に興味があるのに対し，後者は成功の「機会」に興味がある感じがします。
