amongとamid

　新聞を読んでいると，しばしばamidという語に出会います。同じ「〜の間」という意味でも，amidの方がよく出会うような気がするのは気のせいでしょうか。amongとamidにはどのような違いがあるのでしょう。
　『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）には，「amongは同質の個々の物に取り囲まれて入り混じっているという感じを伴うのに対し，amidは異質の物に取り囲まれて周囲の物とは相容れないという感じが強い。したがってamong friendsとはいうが，amid friendsとはふつういわない」とあります。また，LDOCEには，amongはin or through the middle of a group of people or things，amidはwhile noisy, busy, or confused events are happening−used in writing or news reportsと書かれています。何か普段とは違う状況の中で，というニュアンスが込められるように思います。DY（11/16/11付）より例文を取り上げます。
