　Some major companies formally offered jobs Saturday to students graduating next spring, following the end Friday of a voluntary ban designed to help students concentrate on their academic activities.
　Computer company NEC Corp. held ceremonies in Kawasaki and Osaka to notify 350 students of its plan to hire them next business year starting in April. Many other companies are expected to do likewise Monday.
　However, a great many upcoming graduates have yet to land jobs as the massive damage from the March earthquake and tsunami has forced companies, smaller firms in particular, to delay recruitment activities and scale back on hiring new employees.

　今回はlandに着目したいと思います。landというと，「着陸させる」という意味を想起すると思いますが，この記事では目的語がjobsなので意味が通じません。辞書を引くと，landには「（しばしば競り勝って，ほしい仕事や契約）をうまく獲得する，せしめる，ものにする」という意味があることが分かります（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』学研）。また，『ウィズダム英和辞典』（三省堂）によれば，「（仕事・入手困難なもの）を（うまく）手に入れる」ともありました。
　今年の就職は3月11日の地震の影響等もあり，就職状況はさらに厳しい年となっため，倍率も高く，職に就くのが困難な状況だったことを，landを用いることによって表していることがわかります。
