grin from ear to ear

　grinはLDOCEの定義によると，to smile widelyです。歯を見せて笑うことを表します。grin from ear to earのようにfrom ear to earがつくと，grin very widelyと同義になり，「満面の笑みを浮かべる」となります（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』学研）。from ear to earという表現から，耳から耳へ届きそうなくらい，口を左右に大きく開いているというイメージを浮かべることができます。

　辞書を眺めていると，もう１つgrinを使った面白い表現があったので紹介します。grin and bear itで「ぐちをこぼさず[弱音を吐かず]笑ってこらえる，じっと我慢する」という意味を表す表現です（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』同上）。LDOCEの定義を確認すると，to accept unpleasant or difficult situation without complaining, usually because you realize there is nothing you can do to make it betterとあります。日本人はどうにもならないなと感じると苦笑いをしたりしますが，そんなときに使われる表現だといえるでしょう。
