　take on 〜は，「〜を帯びる」という意味で有名なPVですが，ここでは意味があいません。『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』（学研）によれば，「（けんか・競技などで）（しばしば，手ごわい人）を相手に戦う，〜の相手になる」という意味もtake on 〜はもちます。したがって，ここではJapan now plays Jordan in Saitama on Friday 〜とparaphraseすることができます。
　最近，スポーツ関係の記事を読んでいると，しばしば同じ表現や言い換え表現に出会うことがあります。例えば，前回取り上げた，06/04/12付のオマーン戦の記事では，「ヨルダンと戦う」を表すのに動詞playを用いていました。

　また，今回取り上げた記事の冒頭にあったものと，上記に掲載した06/04/12付の冒頭を比較すると，

のように，strongがcomfortableにparaphraseされています。どちらも「勢いのあるスタートを切る」や「幸先の良いスタートを切る」などの訳が考えられます。

　このように，英字新聞は語彙力増強に，すなわち英単語をinputしたりoutputしたりするのに適した教材だといえます。有効に活用していきたいものです。
